Cheltenham has two train stations on the Frankston line: Cheltenham station and Southland station (opened November 2017). Cheltenham station is also planned as a future stop on the Suburban Rail Loop East, a Victorian Government project still in early works.

Cheltenham is approximately 18km south-east of the Melbourne CBD, within the City of Bayside. Verify current timetables and traffic conditions before relying on any commute estimate.

Cheltenham is well served for schooling within the suburb.

Westfield Southland, one of Australia's larger shopping centres, is located in Cheltenham, alongside vibrant local shopping strips in Cheltenham and neighbouring Highett. The suburb also has access to the Kingston Centre health and aged care precinct.

Westfield Southland is a major retail employer, and the Moorabbin Airport business precinct (including Chifley Business Park and DFO Moorabbin) is close by.

Cheltenham station is proposed as a stop on the Suburban Rail Loop East, a long-term Victorian Government rail project still in planning and early works, with detailed timing not yet confirmed. No further projects beyond those noted above are currently confirmed for Cheltenham.
